International Organizations Working for Sustainability

The Earth Council supports and empowers people in building a more secure, equitable and sustainable future by helping in the creation of a global transition to a new development pathway that is sustainable in environmental and human as well as economic terms. This Web site (called the Earth Network for Sustainable Development) includes documents, speeches, resources, and on-line databases.

The Green Channel, based in London, provides a global forum and marketplace for commercial, professional and public interest organizations and is dedicated to environmental change through better communication of environmental information, products, services and initiatives. The Campaigns & Initiatives area is a debate and information platform for both environmental campaign organizations and initiatives. This Web site also includes environmental news and international links to environmental organizations.

Green Cross International (GCI) is a global, non-aligned networking organization working in the area of environment and sustainable development. As an open forum, GCI brings together decision-makers and grassroots movements from all sectors of society to participate in multi-sectoral dialogue for the purpose of implementing sustainable projects.

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is the international environmental agency for local governments. Global consumption and waste production is increasingly concentrated in urban areas and provides opportunities to meet human needs while reducing and managing wastes. Strengthening rural communities reduces the pattern of ecological destruction and population migration which is often a result of rural poverty and desperation.

The International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) promotes sustainable development in decision making internationally and within Canada. IISD contributes new knowledge and concepts, analyzes policies, identifies and disseminates information about best practices, demonstrates how to measure progress, and builds partnerships to amplify these messages. The Web site includes sections on Developing Ideas Digest, Employment Opportunities, Rio +5, and Forest Countdown '97.

The Resource Renewal Institute Green Plan Center educates and informs those interested in Green Plans as the means to a sustainable environment and economy. The Web site includes a world map of environmental policy and background information on the history and practice of green planning.

Rio +5 Forum is a global campaign and forum created to translate sustainable development from agenda to action. Rio +5 is pursuant to the 1992 Earth Summit which produced an unprecedented vision for guiding the world community toward a global commitment to sustainable development: meeting human needs while protecting nature's ability to renew itself.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) influences, encourages and assists societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The IUCN is one of few international organizations where both governments and non-governmental bodies can join together to implement projects as diverse as developing conservation strategies, testing field projects, or building up local and regional capacity.

The World Game Institute is a not-for-profit, non-partisan, global research and education organization dedicated to providing the perspective and information needed to solve the critical problems facing global society. The website provides information about the various types of games available as well providing some valuable articles about the state of the world. It lists many useful publications and maps, many at very inexpensive prices.
