The mission of the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS) is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching and research, and public service, at protected natural areas throughout California.

Over three decades ago, the NRS began to assemble a system of reserves that would broadly represent California's ecological diversity. Today the resulting "ecosystem library" encompasses more than 30 sites and over 100,000 acres. By creating this system of "living laboratories" and "classrooms without walls" and making them available specifically for long-term study, the NRS supports a wide variety of disciplines that require field work in wildlands ecosystems.

These relatively undisturbed samples of the state's natural habitats -- and the facilities needed to support research and teaching -- are available not only to UC researchers, teachers, and students, but to any qualified user from any institution, public or private, throughout the world.
